NEOS politician and National Council member Yannick Chetty (28) is raising concerns about rampant homophobia on the streets of Vienna. For him it is clear: “As a gay man, I want to be able to walk through immigrant neighborhoods without fear.” But now this is not possible. “I wouldn’t walk around in favorites wearing a rainbow flag T-shirt. I would advise against all gays and lesbians. And it’s a sad thing to do,” he says in “Profile.”
Shetty told a television debate that if he and his partner were insulted on the street in Vienna, in seven to eight out of ten cases it was young migrants.
Yannick Shetty also recently criticized LGBT organizations campaigning for Palestine. He particularly describes the “Queers for Palestine” group as “pragmatic”. In her opinion, “People who study gender studies in Austria and demonstrate with rainbows and trans flags take to the streets only once in Gaza City.”
The spokesperson for NEOS Integration and LGBTIQA+ also demanded in “Press”: “We must therefore devote ourselves to a phenomenon that has been growing under the radar for a long time: Islamist-inspired hatred towards non-heteronormative ” He cited a study by integration expert Kenan Güngör, which shows: Homophobic attitudes among migrants are above average. 15 percent of Austrians without a migration background agree with the statement that “homosexuality is never acceptable”. Among youth of Afghan, Syrian and Chechen origin, 51 percent, 50 percent and 41 percent of respondents hold the same opinion.
Yannick Shetty is the youngest member of the National Council.
