Dramatic scenes occurred in Great Britain in late October. Adam Johnson’s throat was cut after a collision during an ice hockey game (eXXpress reports). He was hit on the neck by the blade of his opponent’s ice skate. It was then announced that the former DEL player had died at the age of just 29. According to the Daily Mail, he fell while trying to get out of the snow. Johnson lost a lot of blood and had to be revived on the ice by team doctors. Both teammates and opposing players formed a circle.
The game was canceled after this dramatic incident. 8,000 spectators have left the field. Johnson was taken to a hospital in Sheffield. But there worst fears were confirmed. Adam Johnson has died.
Now an arrest has been made on suspicion of murder. South Yorkshire Police announced this on Tuesday. However, there is no further information regarding the identity of the man. This means it is not clear whether the person arrested is a rival or not. A police spokesperson said in a statement: “Our investigation began immediately after this tragedy and we have carried out extensive investigations to reconstruct the events that led to Adam’s death in these unprecedented circumstances.”
Following this tragic incident, the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) has made neck protection mandatory for players from January 1. The decision was taken in 2024.
