The SPO, which rules the city with an absolute majority, announced ahead of the local council meeting next Tuesday that it would not agree to a deal, saying the online retailer “will not proceed with the project”. A spokesperson said they would respect the vote and “will look for other ways to optimize our existing network in Austria.”
“We regret the decision against the settlement and thank you for the constructive exchange with the citizens and community representatives of St. Valentin,” Amazon said in a written statement. Fractal Development’s plan was to buy and develop the land and then lease it to the online retailer. This would have been Amazon’s fifth distribution center in Austria.
