The assault rifles were replicas of the famous Russian Kalashnikov. They are often used by terrorists, but also by serious criminal gangs and family clans. Vienna attacker Kuztim F. (20) also used a replica AK-47, in this case a Zastrava, in his attack in the city, in which four people were killed three years ago.
The German caravan team was traveling on the Tauern Autobahn when police targeted and stopped it near Weissenstein. The arms smugglers, who had not only Serbian-made assault rifles, but also appropriate magazines and ammunition, entered from Slovenia and through the Karavančan tunnel.
The State Security Agency, which has now taken over the investigation, does not yet want to release any information about the driver of the caravan due to confidentiality reasons. It was not stated whether the assault rifle was intended for the German or possibly the Austrian market. However, it cannot be ruled out that the high explosive deliveries were intended for violent anti-state groups or terrorist organizations.
Further investigations into the smuggling vehicle were excellent. A customs mobile X-ray machine with associated experts was specially requested from Vienna. After this the team was illuminated in Villach.
