The Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office has closed its investigation into suspected fraud in a real estate project against former Chancellor Christian Kern. However, the closure is not yet legally binding as Viennese real estate company Sveta Group, which is also involved in the case, has requested justification for the decision.
The case involved a project related to the production of modular prefabricated properties, in which a company called Kern was involved. According to the magazine “Profile”, it served as an interface for the project between Sveta Group and the Slovakian company Eco Smart Home.
The project was in financial trouble. Kern dropped out and the project was never implemented. After this, Sweta Group filed a fraud complaint against business partners and Kern. According to Sveta, the amount involved is more than one million euros.
The investigation has now been closed – not legally. Kern’s attorney Paul Kessler in July dismissed the allegations against the former chancellor as baseless and “outrageous.”
