Borussia Dortmund took an important step towards the round of 16 in the Champions League on Tuesday. BVB beat Newcastle United 2–0 (1–0) at home and temporarily took the lead in Group F. OFB teammate Marcel Sabitzer set up for the opening goal.
FC Barcelona missed its first chance for early promotion with a 0–1 defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk in Hamburg. The Catalans were disappointing at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion, looking inactive for long periods and never bringing their star striker Robert Lewandowski into the game. The former world footballer has been waiting in vain for more than six weeks for a goal. The only goal of the game was scored by Danilo Cican with a header (40th). Barça suffered its second defeat in its last three competitive games. A win would have secured their first place in the round of 16 in three years. Now Shakhtar have smelled the fuse again, trailing the Group H leaders by just three points.
