Admiral Viktor Sokolov is said to have died in an attack on the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s headquarters in Sevastopol on the Crimean peninsula. According to the information, 105 other people were injured in the attack. The headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet is “beyond repair”. It was “hit by an enemy missile strike” on Friday, as officials on the Russian-occupied peninsula announced. As a rule, Moscow does not provide any information about its losses. The Ukrainian military claimed responsibility for the airstrike.
The Russian Black Sea Fleet is stationed at the port of Sevastopol. The city is also home to one of Russia’s command centers for Moscow’s war against Ukraine. From there supplies are delivered to Russian occupation troops in the south of Ukraine and rocket attacks are controlled.
Since Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine began in February last year, Crimea has been the target of repeated attacks, which have recently intensified. The Ukrainian leadership has repeatedly said it wants to recapture Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.
