Sparrows have been whistling from the rooftops for some time now. It’s official as of Friday! Julian Nagelsmann is the new national coach. The former Bayern coach will replace Hansi Flick. He has to take care of the DFB team until the domestic European Championships in 2024. But Nagelsmann’s signing was met with mixed reactions. Philipp Lahm, tournament director of next year’s European Championships in Germany, drew sharp criticism. In his opinion, Nagelsmann was making too much money.
“Four or six million annual salaries for the national coach job – that’s too much! This task should be seen as an honor,” the former German national player said in an interview with “Bild”.
The new DFB national coach also made a financial settlement for his new job. Nevertheless, Lahm added: “The DFB is currently struggling financially, and therefore, in my opinion, the association should ensure that the national coach’s salary is significantly reduced in the future.” Nagelsmann receives 400,000 euros per month for his job at the DFB. Unlike his contract with Bayern, which runs until 2026, the talented football coach left a lot of money. His involvement with the DFB initially lasted until after the European Championships.
However, not only the coaches but also the players are expected to earn less in the future. Title bonuses for national players should also be reduced significantly. For a European Championship or World Cup title, each player received 400,000 euros. Negotiations for the upcoming domestic European Championship are still pending.
Things would become critical for Nagelsmann on October 14. Then on the schedule is an international match against the United States. Four days later the DFB team meets Mexico. On November 21, Germany will stop in Vienna for a friendly international against the OFB team. Nagelsmann has already made a personnel decision. Ilkay Gundogan will remain captain of the German national team.
Nagelsmann missed the upcoming European Championships in his home country. “This is something special – something that happens every few decades. I attribute everything to the fact of organizing a great tournament in a great country. I really want to accept this challenge.” wanted to continue the commitment beyond that nagelsmann Don’t ostracize. “If we sit there in the summer and say: It was very successful, it met these points: success, a certain happiness, fruitful for both parties – then nothing is ruled out from my side.”
