This new weapon system of the North Koreans is not at all conducive to world peace: the launch of the first nuclear-powered submarine of the North Korean Armed Forces took place in front of the country’s head of state and dictator – Kim Jong-un. (39) Clad in white summer suit on the pier.
As state news agency KCNA announced, the submarine “No. 841” is now patrolling the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.
“The rapid development of our naval forces is a priority that cannot be postponed in light of the enemies’ recent aggressive moves and military actions,” North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said in a speech at the launching ceremony, according to the agency.
It is not yet entirely clear what missiles the new submarine is armed with. North Korea has previously tested several submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) and cruise missiles that can be launched from submarines. According to Naval News, the Hyeonmu 4-4 missiles are likely to be on a nuclear submarine – they have a range of 500 km, reach speeds of 4,500 km/h and their warheads can be loaded with up to 1,000 kg of explosives.
The threat to South Korean and Japanese cities is on the rise again – so the submarine’s presentation could also be seen as a show of strength ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Vladimir Putin.
