The two Presidents also discussed the Abraham Accords and the security threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program. The Abraham Accords is a historic agreement through which Israel normalized its relations with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan.
The two presidents also shared concerns about Iran and stressed the need to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
Relations between Austria and Israel have been described as stronger than ever. It now intends to further deepen the strategic partnership. Israel is seen as an important source of innovation, research and technology. Vienna’s popularity as a travel destination for Israeli tourists was also mentioned.
In the afternoon, the two politicians commemorated Jewish Austrians who died in the Holocaust by laying wreaths at the Shoah Name Wall in Ostarichi Park. The Name Wall in Vienna-Alsergrund commemorates those who were unable to escape death after 1938 and died of starvation abroad in ghettos or extermination camps.
Herzog exchanged ideas with representatives of the Jewish community in Austria and awarded merit scholarships to outstanding students. IKG Chairman Oskar Deutsch emphasized the close ties between the Jewish community in Austria and the State of Israel.
