Fire brigade calls for similar safety standards for e-mobility. “Manufacturers will be obliged to install the battery in a designated place in the vehicle that is easily accessible in the event of an accident,” says Frank Hachemer, vice president of the German Fire Brigades Association. Depending on the manufacturer, batteries are sometimes installed in the lower sector.
Hachheimer stresses that the automatic switch-off for electricity to be able to carry out extinguishing and rescue work does not always work: “Especially in the case of serious accidents, it is dangerous when emergency services cannot reach injured people. Uses rescue equipment to save lives without knowing where parts that may still be alive are in the way.
Pictures of burning electric cars are being shared fast on social media. Indeed, according to statistics, e-cars do not catch fire more often than vehicles with combustion engines. But there seems to be a problem: it’s harder to fire them.
According to Markus Egelhaf, an expert from the Stuttgart security company Decra, the automatic switch-off is not triggered only in exceptional situations. This can happen when an electric car crashes into a charging station or a short circuit results in a fire while driving without hitting another vehicle.
