In August 2021 – exactly two years ago – the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan. Since then, the German federal government has already transferred 371 million euros to the country in development aid. The German Ministry of Development (BMZ) actually ceased its work after the regime change, but has since resumed it, as reported by “Spiegel” and the news forum “Neuss”.
A spokeswoman for the BMZ insisted, “All funds are used to maintain basic services and strengthen population resilience and are implemented independently of government.”
The ministry also emphasized that “no money flows through the ministries”. And further: “The measures are mainly implemented through international organizations and non-governmental organizations.” Funds have also been reduced considerably. In 2019 alone, 365.5 million euros flowed into Afghanistan, the ministry finally explained.
