New York’s Democratic Mayor Eric Adams has been issuing warnings about immigration for months. “We need to control the border, declare a state of emergency at the state level, and provide the necessary financial resources for this national crisis,” Adams said at a recent news conference. There is no room left in emergency shelters in New York.
Since the spring of 2022, 90,000 migrants have arrived in New York alone. Since there are no asylum centers in the United States, the city initially resorted to its own homeless shelters. In addition, New York has set up at least 188 new emergency shelters in recent months, including shuttered hotels, former prisons and a warehouse at John F Kennedy Airport.
Adams estimates that the cost of dealing with the crisis this year will be $4.3 billion. New York had reached its limit when it came to accepting immigrants. The city can no longer cope with the influx of asylum seekers.
In April, the mayor of New York publicly accused US President Joe Biden (both politicians are members of the Democrats) of “abandoning” the city because of the migrant problem. In July, New York limited the length of time single people can stay in its emergency shelters to 60 days. Adams also announced that he would use the leaflets to inform newcomers to the southern frontier of their town’s difficult situation, in other words, to stop them.
It says in cautionary terms, the cost of housing and living in New York is very high. There is no guarantee of government help. And further: “Please consider another city when deciding where to locate in the United States.”
With his criticism, Adams has added to the dilemma for Joe Biden. During the election campaign, the president promised a more humane immigration policy than his predecessor Donald Trump (2017–2021). This led to a sharp increase in emigration from Latin America.
Migration statistics underscore this: While border guards picked up nearly one million illegal immigrants in 2019, there will be about 2.4 million in 2022. So former President Donald Trump and Republicans accused Biden of “opening” the southern border and thereby inciting “aggression”.
