Chancellor Karl Nehmer (OVP) will receive his counterpart in Salzburg today. A press conference at the University of Mozarteum is scheduled for 11:15 am. The main topic of the meeting should be border control within the Schengen area. Austria has been criticized for blocking Schengen expansion to include Bulgaria and Romania.
But Nehmer is also critical: “Germany is still carrying out border controls with Austria, which shows that the Schengen system is structurally non-functional,” the federal chancellor stressed before the meeting. And: “I will also address further EU action in the fight against irregular migration as well as intra-European border controls and the functioning of Schengen.”
