War continues to break out in Ukraine. Thousands of soldiers have been injured, missing or killed on a 1,200-km front since February 24, 2022. As the New York Times reported on Friday, citing unnamed US officials, that number is already approaching 500,000.
The newspaper reported that Russia’s military losses were approaching 300,000, including 120,000 dead and 170,000 to 180,000 wounded. It states that the death toll in Ukraine is 70,000 and that the number of injured is between 100,000 and 120,000.
Numerous losses and setbacks are causing a split in Kiev’s leadership, as reported by the US media. The editors of the US weekly Newsweek in New York quoted a high-ranking Ukrainian government insider as saying: “There are definitely some differences of opinion within the Ukrainian leadership regarding military strategy.”
The source further explained that while Army Chief Valery Zalusny wants to continue applying pressure on Russian troops, the question on the political side is whether it makes the most sense at this point in time.
