According to their own statements, police launched a massive search on Saturday for at least four people. They raided a house in a township near Durban city on Friday evening and killed four people there. Two other people were shot dead in a neighboring cottage.
Police spokesman Robert Netshiunda said a preliminary investigation indicated the suspected gang leader asked the victims for their IDs before shooting them. A police spokesman said, “He is possibly involved and is wanted by the police in connection with another murder in which he appears to have lost his identity.” According to press reports, the leader assumed that one of the victims had his identity document with him.
Gun attacks are common in South Africa and the country has one of the highest murder rates in the world. Last week a British doctor was shot dead in Cape Town after he turned his car in the wrong direction and was caught up in a violent strike by taxi drivers.
