In Niger, the party of ousted President Mohamed Bazoum is demanding the release of the head of state. According to a statement by the PNDS-Tarayya party on Wednesday, the entire country should unite. Bazoum and his family were being kept at their residence in inhumane conditions. There is neither running water nor electricity. In addition, the President would also be denied medical care and fresh food.
A former rebel leader had earlier called for resistance to the military government. Rissa Ag Boula launched a movement on Wednesday against the junta that came to power in a coup on 26 July. The Council of Resistance for the Republic (CRR) is demanding the reinstatement of ousted President Bazoum, who has been under house arrest since taking office.
A meeting of 15 heads of state of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is scheduled to take place in Nigeria’s capital Abuja on Thursday to discuss Niger. There is also the question of a possible military intervention to restore constitutional order.
