Against the background of the Russian war of aggression, the EU has paid additional aid in the billions to Ukraine. The 1.5 billion euros are already the fourth tranche of Ukraine aid, as the EU Commission announced in Brussels on Tuesday.
Up to 18 billion euros are planned as part of the macro-financial assistance package. “Since the beginning of this year, the EU has already disbursed €7.5 billion in macro-financial assistance. These funds will contribute significantly to Ukraine’s immediate financial needs. And there will be more to come,” said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This is intended to continue paying wages and pensions and maintaining hospitals, schools and accommodation for resettled people, for example. Money is to flow in June. The aid is tied to Ukraine meeting certain conditions. Among other things, the rule of law should be strengthened and it should be made transparent where the money goes. Under these conditions, the next 1.5 billion should flow to Ukraine in June. Since the beginning of the war in February 2022, Ukraine has received aid payments of around 70 billion euros, according to a statement by the EU Commission. This included, for example, financial, humanitarian, budgetary and military support from the EU, the Member States and the European financial institutions.
