A storm has swept across eastern Austria since Saturday night. Geosphere Austria reported wind peaks of 111 km/h at the Jubilee Observatory. There have already been several fire brigade operations in Vienna, Lower Austria and Upper Austria.
In Upper Austria alone, the provincial fire brigade command reported 60 missions. The storm even destroyed the roof of the Landestheater in Linz. “The tin roof of the stage tower crumpled up like tinfoil,” it said in a press release.
The Vienna fire brigade reported 50 operations as a result of the storm. “It was about fallen trees, scaffolding and loose roof tiles and windows,” said spokesman Lukas Schauer. There were also gusts of over 100 kilometers per hour in the Austrian capital. Both the palace gardens and the Schönbrunn Zoo were temporarily closed for security reasons.
