Hail insurance: Agriculture is a role model when it comes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions
Report by the Federal Environment Agency on the greenhouse gas balance for 2021 shows: Agriculture has done its homework!
Editorial March 10, 2023 09:07
After the corona-related standstill in 2020, greenhouse gas emissions rose again to pre-crisis levels according to the recently published report by the Federal Environment Agency on the greenhouse gas balance in 2021. However, one thing is clear: agriculture has done its homework in the published time series and is a role model for other economic sectors. Since 1990, 16.2 percent fewer greenhouse gases have been emitted in this sector, which is so vital to the economy.
The sad comparison: In the same period, emissions from traffic – including national air traffic – increased by 56.9 percent. “The fact is: agriculture is the number one victim of climate change. You have to keep in mind: in the past ten years, extreme weather events have caused total damage of almost two billion euros in domestic agriculture alone, mainly due to climate change. At the same time, the agricultural sector is an important player in the fight against the greenhouse effect. It is all the more gratifying that greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector have fallen in recent years,” says Dr. Kurt Weinberger, CEO of Austrian Hail Insurance.
