In order to receive a lighter sentence, Antonio Panzeri is said to have agreed on a deal with the Belgian judiciary. In exchange for a reduced sentence, the mastermind behind the Qatar gate is revealing the details of the scandal, says Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, the lawyer for the imprisoned Eva Kaili. After naming the first names in December, more accomplices are to follow. “There are reports that Panzeri will name MPs from Germany, France, Italy and Belgium,” said the lawyer in a television interview on Kontra TV.
From the Greek lawyer’s point of view, however, this is a risky move. “They told him that he will stay in prison for a year, in return he will call them the names they want,” implying that Panzeri is politically manipulated. The agreement will “definitely fail” because there are “strong reactions from the people affected”. In addition, two Belgian MEPs already want to reveal new details about Panzeri, he added.
