Because of corruption and other violations of the rule of law in Hungary, the European Commission has reduced Hungary’s payments of 7.5 billion euros from the EU budget (eXXpress reported). This should now remain the case: the EU Commission wants to continue blocking the billions. This emerges from a recommendation presented by EU Budget Commissioner Johannes Hahn, Commission Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis and Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders in Brussels on Wednesday.
The final decision is to be made at an EU finance ministerial council next Tuesday. Europe Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) has announced that Austria trusts the assessment of the EU Commission.
