The next call for renunciation comes from the German Environmental Aid: no Christmas lights in cities and in private households, according to the latest demand. Due to the energy crisis, but also because of the climate and the Ukraine, the association proposed an upper limit for lighting per city. It criticized “private lighting orgies” and recommended a limit of one lit tree per community. So this year’s Christmas season will be “very special”. The echo in the social networks is clear.
The German Environmental Aid, a lobbyist association that regularly attracts attention with nonsensical and outrageous demands, is also speaking out again. “This winter it should be a matter of course that there will be no Christmas lights in towns, nor in houses and apartments,” explained Federal Managing Director Jürgen Resch Editorial Network Germany (RND) and demanded: “In view of the war in Ukraine, the energy shortage, but also for reasons of climate protection, we should pause for a moment.”
In this regard, he denounced the power consumption, because “private lighting orgies alone cause a power consumption of over 600 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year – as much as a medium-sized city with 400,000 inhabitants consumes in a year”. Another saving would be possible by doing without Christmas lights in towns and communities. His suggestion: one illuminated tree per community. “Consciously doing without here, saving and showing solidarity could even make this Christmas season a very special one,” Resch said.
Renunciation is the order of the day and corresponding regulations and paternalism are hailing from all sides for German citizens. The impending energy shortage and skyrocketing energy prices will ensure that citizens will also save on Christmas lights. There is no need for demands from a “warning association” – or should lawsuits be expected because of too many Christmas lights? In the best Germany of all time, everything is possible. In the meantime, the echo is clear in the social networks:
