According to a media report, the United States warned the German government weeks ago of possible attacks on gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. As the “Spiegel” reports, a corresponding tip from the US secret service CIA was received in Berlin in the summer. According to the magazine, a government spokesman did not want to comment publicly.
The German Economics Minister Robert Habeck has already made it clear that the leaks in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 Baltic Sea pipelines are the result of targeted attacks. In the meantime, one knows for sure “that they were not caused by natural occurrences or events or material fatigue, but that there really were attacks on the infrastructure,” said the Green politician at an event of leading business associations.
According to a seismologist, the recorded seismic activity at the site of the Nord Stream pipeline leaks is related to explosions. The seismic data made it clear that the explosions took place in the water and not in the rock beneath the sea floor, says Bjorn Lund, a seismologist at Uppsala University’s Swedish National Seismic Network. So there could be no earthquakes or landslides.
All observers are currently confronted with a puzzle: Although an attack on Nord Stream is now almost certain, and this must have been very complex in terms of planning and implementation, there is only guesswork as to who is really the perpetrator. No matter who you think of: Nowhere is a really conclusive motive to be found. All the assumptions that are currently circulating on the Internet tend to reflect the respective world view of the respective proponents. The climate activists of the “last generation” have announced that they want to shut down German oil and gas pipelines if the federal government does not meet their demands. This should ensure that the expansion and financing of future “fossil infrastructure” is to be stopped.
