The night before the World Championship race on Sunday, Mathieu van der Poel had a dispute with two teenagers. The professional cyclist is said to have pushed a 13 and 14-year-old girl in Wollongong, Australia. This is reported by the newspaper “De Telegraaf” on Monday. The girls kept knocking on the door, disturbing Van der Poel’s night’s sleep. Now the Dutchman has to pay a fine of 1000 euros.
Actually, the case should not be heard until Tuesday. However, at the request of the defense attorney, the trial was eventually brought forward. According to the judge, Van der Poel took the law into his own hands. It would therefore have been advisable to call the hotel’s security service. The defense attorney appealed the fine. Nevertheless, the Dutch professional cyclist can start the journey home regardless of this.
Van der Poel was taken into police custody after the altercation. He spent most of the night before the World Championship race at the police station. The co-favorite still started, but got off his bike after an hour.
