Medvedev’s saber-rattling – Use nuclear weapons to defend new territories
If those three regions in Ukraine, where urgent referenda are to be held starting Friday, join Russia, the Kremlin wants to defend them in the event of a Ukrainian attack with nuclear weapons.
Is determined to defend the new territories with nuclear weapons, Dmitry Medvedev
Moscow is determined to hold referenda on joining Russia in Russian-held Ukrainian regions of Luhansk, Donetsk and Kherson (in eastern and south-eastern Ukraine). Former Russian President and current head of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that the referendums planned by the pro-Russian separatists are taking place and that there is “no way back”. And Medvedev continues: “The Western establishment and all citizens of NATO countries must understand that Russia has chosen its own path.”
If someone attacks Russian territory, the use of nuclear weapons is legitimate
He threatened Ukraine that Russia was ready to use any means, including nuclear weapons, to defend the territories. As an explanation: If the citizens of the occupied territories vote in the referendum for an annexation to Russia, these regions are suddenly Russian state territory. The use of nuclear weapons in their defense would then be legitimate. According to military experts, the nuclear weapons threatened by Russia are less explosive devices with the destructive power of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs in World War II, but so-called tactical nuclear explosive devices with which military bases or important infrastructure facilities can be completely destroyed.
