With the recently published “Ice Age Video”, the Kremlin leaves no doubt: Europe is to be blackmailed into stopping gas supplies, ending EU sanctions and also stopping aid to Ukraine.
The marketing department of the energy company Gazprom has done a great job on this: the video producers are very specifically relying on the fact that millions of Europeans are very afraid of a catastrophic winter with mass unemployment, freezing children and massive power outages. The pictures will also increase the fear of a bad winter with cold and chaos among many Austrians.
Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation, is deliberately dividing European society: Some of society will continue to support even more massive support for Ukraine in its war against the Russian invaders – with even more billions, even more weapons, with the most modern tanks and fighter jets. And maybe at some point with an – unofficial – deployment of NATO troops.
The other, probably larger part of the Europeans will support the easier way due to the threatening crisis situation: negotiations with Vladimir Putin, a ceasefire with Russia, an end to the EU sanctions – only not dramatically effective anyway – and an end to the economic war. The fear, the coldness and the poor communication of European politicians will help Russia: If Europe’s big cities are shaken by mass demonstrations, if governments are about to be voted out of office, if right-wing parties are massively on the rise as a result, Brussels will also have to accept the will of the majority.
