Tangible scandal at the European Basketball Championship. Hosts Georgia beat Turkey 88-83. So far so good! But after the game there were ugly scenes. Players from both teams hit each other in the dressing room. Turkey even threatened to withdraw from the European Championship. Both teams gave each other nothing during the game. Furkan Korkmaz (Turkey) and Duda Sanadze (Georgia) clashed in the fourth quarter.
But the game clock continued to run for 22 seconds. Nobody took any notice of the altercation. Even the spectators joined in the wild scenes, throwing objects at Turkish players. The referees then decided to disqualify both players. But then it really came to a head.
The vice-president of the Turkish federation, Omer Onan, commented on the incident: “When Furkan was walking down the hall towards the changing room, he was attacked by Georgian players who were not in the squad and the downed Georgian and some police officers. A player who is on his way to the locker room should not be attacked! After the game ended, around 30 police officers engaged us in a fight.” According to Onan, there was also a dispute with the Georgian police: “You have to imagine that – we got into fights with the Georgian police! I have already contacted the world association.”
If you don’t get the video footage from the security cameras, you will leave the tournament. The vice president expressed his dissatisfaction with the conditions during the basketball championships: “The conditions here were a disaster from the start. We need 45 minutes from the hotel to the hall and we are not protected by the police.” Turkey also protested against the outcome of the game because of the missing 22 seconds.
