What a strain on nerves: In the middle of the space walk, the ground station in Moscow suddenly reported massive problems with the power supply of a space suit of the cosmonauts who were supposed to do repair work outside the ISS.
Oleg Artemyev (51) hears the not really reassuring message: “Oleg, you have to get back to the ISS airlock as soon as possible.” And ground control then declares, “Your space suit is losing power, and it’s not the fan or the pumps from it.”
The video from the ISS external camera then shows the cosmonaut immediately trying to get back into the space station. The ground station urges him: “Oleg, drop everything, come back.” And for a few seconds it is not clear what is happening – then finally: Oleg Artemyev has made it into the ISS, he can connect to the on-board generator, he is saved.
The Russian and US space agencies emphasize that the cosmonaut “never was in mortal danger”. The drama of the emergency can be clearly felt when watching the video.
