The police fleet is growing. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner handed over five new motorcycles to the “White Mice”, the motorized traffic troop of the Vienna State Police Headquarters, on behalf of their colleagues in the federal states. The Interior Ministry has purchased a total of 34 new BMW machines. Cost including special equipment and service for the next five years: 820,000 euros.
With the purchase, however, bad times also began for the participants in illegal street races: Among the motorcycles are also five civilian BMW S 100 XRs with a top speed of 255 km/h.
“On duty for Austria, our police officers are on the move between Lake Constance and Lake Neusiedl every day. The motorized traffic troop in particular covers a particularly large number of kilometers in order to take action against speeders, drink and drug drivers and to make our streets safe for everyone,” said the Minister of the Interior. And further: “This work is very challenging. It is therefore important to me that the vehicles meet the latest safety standards.”
In total there are now more than 400 motorcycles from different manufacturers in the police fleet. In addition to being used for traffic surveillance, the motorcycles offer a major advantage, especially when driving in narrow or congested streets.
