The footage is straight out of a horror film: a passenger on a Spanish train films how violent forest fires forced a train to stop. There is unrest among the passengers, a man looks stressed into the flames. But it was only a moment of shock: After a few minutes of anxious waiting, the train was actually able to continue.
The scene takes place in western Spain on the Zamora-Sanabria route at around 9.30 am. The heat wave has led to huge forest fires in several European countries. Thousands of firefighters are fighting the flames in Spain and France. 900 firefighters are deployed in Portugal. A total of ten (!) forest fires are raging in the country.
In Spain there were still about 30 active forest fires as of Sunday evening. The fires have destroyed tens of thousands of hectares of land in the past few days, as reported by the state television broadcaster RTVE, citing the various regional authorities.
