Sad spectacle: According to Motlefala Mojapelo, Waterval Police are investigating a case of alcohol abuse following a ‘drinking contest’. Anyone who “could consume an entire bottle of Jägermeister in a given time was to receive 200 South African Rand”. That corresponds to about twelve euros – and immediately became a death sentence!
One of the participants “collapsed immediately” and was taken to a hospital. There the man was declared dead. According to information from the British media, the time taken to drink the bottle of Jägermeister was two minutes.
Videos on the Internet show men cheering on the stranger while he drinks the herbal liqueur (35 percent alcohol by volume). The police confirmed the incident. A spokesman is quoted by The Sun as saying:
“Police in Waterval, outside Louis Trichardt, have launched an investigation following an incident of apparent alcohol abuse at one of the local liquor stores in the village of Mashamba, with patrons allegedly taking part in a so-called drinking contest.”
The Blue Corner Car Wash & Liquor Restaurant bar declined to comment on the allegations.
