This is probably not how the passengers of an easyjet Airbus with destination Menorca imagined the start of their vacation: 30 minutes before arrival, the plane suddenly got company at lofty heights. Several F18 fighter jets circled the Airbus and gave the pilot clear signs with wing movements to follow.
As it turned out, the fighter jets belonged to the Spanish Air Force. This had received a bomb threat. The military aviators escorted the holiday plane to the island’s airport, where the Airbus landed 30 minutes after the scheduled arrival time. What followed were four hours of thorough identity checks. A spokesman for easyJet confirmed: “easyJet can confirm that flight EZY8303 from London Gatwick to Menorca was escorted by military aircraft on landing in Menorca and disembarkation was delayed due to precautionary security checks”.
Passengers documented the wild scenes with cameras, and the video has been viewed more than 50,000 times on Twitter. Attentive observers noticed that the same fighter jet model was also flown by actor Tom Cruise in the legendary “Top Gun” film series.
Numerous users have commented on the Twitter video so far, with one putting out his theory as to why the plane was intercepted: “It was a security measure following a bomb threat that was posted on social media – allegedly by some young inmates themselves, just for ‘joke ‘.” Since no evidence of a bomb was found, the plagued British vacationers were able to leave the plane after four hours.
