A tragic swimming accident happened in Vienna on Wednesday: A family was on the Neuen with a rental boat Danube underway, with the mother and five-year-old son sitting in the boat and the father swimming alongside. The boy jumped into the water but, according to the police, soon showed “signs of exhaustion”. His parents wanted to help him, but they couldn’t. Witnesses save the wife and child, but the father perished. He died during the rescue operation.
The family was out on the water by boat around 5:45 p.m. First, the 38-year-old mother jumped into the water to help the boy. However, the parents should not have been able to bring the child or themselves back into the boat on their own, according to a police broadcast on Thursday. While the wife and child were being rescued, the 43-year-old father went under and never reappeared.
A large contingent of emergency services searched for the man. The Vienna fire brigade alone responded with seven vehicles, helicopters and 34 men, nine of whom were fully trained and equipped divers. They finally got the man out of the water. The revitalization measures had already begun on the way to the shore. The 43-year-old was flown to a hospital in a “Christophorus 9” rescue helicopter, but died during the rescue operation. The woman, the boy and a helper were taken to a hospital with symptoms of exhaustion and hypothermia.
