Once again, the Champions League didn’t come to fruition. Paris St. Germain tries in vain to win the premier class year after year. In the past season it was already over in the round of 16 against Real Madrid. And that despite the fact that superstars like Lionel Messi or Sergio Ramos have been signed. There were also calibers like Gianluigi Donnarumma or Achraf Hakimi from Inter Milan. A lot was also hoped for from Georginio Wijnaldum, who was brought in from Liverpool FC. But the new arrivals didn’t hit the market as expected. From the start, Messi never really felt comfortable in the city of love. Ramos struggled with injuries and barely featured and Donnarumma shared the goal with Keylor Navas.
After the disappointment, PSG decided to change the sporting leadership. Among other things, sports director Leonardo had to resign. Coach Mauricio Pochettino will probably not play a role in the plans either. The separation seems to be only a matter of time, although the official confirmation is still pending. However, in Leonaro’s case, the successor has already been presented.
Luis Campos will not only be a consultant in the future, but will also take care of squad planning. “I am delighted to be joining Paris Saint-Germain, who I believe are the most ambitious and exciting club in world football. I firmly believe in the club’s vision and I can’t wait to continue developing the great potential of this extraordinary club,” said Campos at his presentation.
PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi told CNN in May that there would be “many changes” at the club to usher in a “new era”. Zinedine Zidane has long been traded as a possible successor to Pochettino. But the former world-class French player will not be the new coach of Paris St. Germain. “We never spoke to him, directly or indirectly. Many clubs are interested in him, including national teams, but we have never spoken to him,” explained the PSG president.
Instead, one should have chosen Christophe Galtier. In the 2020/21 season he sensationally won the championship with Lille. He should be bought out of his contract for ten million euros. Paris doesn’t seem to be lacking in money. Nevertheless, it was realized that the large sums alone are not enough to celebrate success. Accordingly, one would like to take a different path in the future. “The goal for the next season is clear: work 200 percent every day. We must become humble again. Those who want to stay in their comfort zone, those who don’t want to fight, stay aside,” Nasser Al-Khelaifi clarifies.
This should make things tight for some superstars – including Neymar. The Brazilian superstar has attracted attention in recent months with escapades and listlessness. In any case, the PSG boss avoided a clear commitment to the Brazilian. If Neymar leaves PSG, there shouldn’t be a lack of offers. Juventus Turin, Newcastle United and Chelsea FC have put out feelers. But whether Juventus Turin wants to pay the annual salary of 30 million remains more than questionable. A move to Newcastle also seems unlikely. A move to Chelsea would still be the most realistic scenario, especially since Neymar would meet his ex-coach Thomas Tuchel. Together they reached the 2020 Champions League final.
As of now, however, the signs are more likely to stay with PSG. A hungry new team is to be built around Kylian Mbappe, who recently extended his contract, and which will finally win the Champions League.
