“Language shapes the consciousness and conception of gender roles. The aim of the City of Vienna is to address people of all genders and all gender identities fairly and respectfully,” writes the most livable city in the world in its guidelines for gender-fair formulation. The arbitration board for housing matters, the MA 50, has now overshot this goal for many Viennese.
By the way: while the city of Vienna is trying to please as many genders as possible, a new “flag dispute” is raging in the LGBTIQ+ community. Although the rainbow flag is being hoisted in many countries because of the worldwide Pride month, lesbian activists are not happy: They do not feel addressed by the rainbow colors, which are racist and transphobic. That’s why an orange-pink flag is now being used among lesbians.
