The EU Parliament has voted to extend the European regulation for the Corona certificate by one year. “Due to the unpredictable development of the virus”, the parliament voted for the extension, said Spanish MEP Juan Fernando López Aguilar in Brussels on Thursday. The current rules on the digital Covid passport for travel in the EU are only valid until June 30th.
Last week, the EU Parliament and the member states had already informally agreed on an extension of the digital corona vaccination card. The formal approval of the two sides was still pending. Member States have yet to give their consent.
An extension of the rules for the Corona certificate only affects travel within the EU. In addition, hardly any EU country still requires the presentation of a vaccination or test certificate upon entry. Access conditions for cafés or cinemas, for example, remain unaffected by an extension because these decisions are up to the respective member states.
The EU states had agreed on a common regulation so that certificates in the Corona-Warn-App are recognized throughout the EU. This requirement would have expired at the end of June. The EU Commission had proposed an extension of one year.
