The Austrian internationals seem to be in demand in Italy. According to transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Stefan Ilsanker is about to move to Genoa. The 61-time ÖFB team player is leaving Eintracht Frankfurt for free this summer. In the German Bundesliga, Ilsanker came to a total of 129 games for RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt. The midfielder is very popular with Genoa. He is said to have already completed a medical check in the port city.
From a sporting point of view, however, a change would not be a promotion, especially since Genoa is only second-rate after being relegated from Serie A in Italy. The club has a long history in Italy. Genoa is the oldest club in Italy and has been champion nine times. However, they were last champions in the 1923/24 season.
At Genoa, Ilsanker would meet an old acquaintance. The German Johannes Spors acts as General Manager atgenau and knows Ilsanker from their time together at RB Leipzig. Spors was chief scout at RB Leipzig from 2015 to 2019.
