Joy at Peter McDonald. The President of SPORTUNION was re-elected at the 25th Ordinary Bundestag in Graz with 100 percent approval. The sports umbrella organization can look back on an eventful presidency from 2018 to 2022. Association President Peter McDonald and his team (Karoline EdtstadlerMichaela HuberYvonne AbrasionWilfried DrexlerPamela Forster and Urs Tanner) were confirmed in office with an impressive 100 percent and thus unanimously. “We fought successfully for the concerns and preservation of Austria’s sport and club system. Together we have moved and implemented a lot in difficult times. A big THANK YOU to the entire SPORTUNION family for their commitment and trust! With combined forces, we will continue to move people from all age groups and be a strong voice for our sports clubs and volunteers,” said the re-elected SPORTUNION President McDonald, who wants to further increase the importance of sports in Austria.
However, the Bundestag also looked to the future. The topics of volunteering, digitization, fair play, community, gender equality and sustainability were also important focal points. “If Austria becomes a cultural nation as well as a sports nation we must all do our part and fight for it proactively. Political prioritization needs to change fundamentally. Exercising sport can become part of our Austrian DNA, for which we have a coordinated Sports infrastructure offensive and need more space for mass, youth and health sports,” states the head of the association, who would like to further increase the healthy life years in the coming years, as Austria is currently below the EU average.
Among other things, the association would like to have membership fees in sports clubs tax deductible in the future. “Our club culture with its numerous volunteers is an indispensable part of the Austrian identity. Sports clubs are a social institution and a value-oriented school of life for our children, and volunteering is at the heart of our society. We have therefore decided to submit an application to the Bundestag for recognition of our Club culture as an immaterial world cultural heritage in Austria to UNESCO,” emphasizes McDonald. Sport is also a key to strengthening togetherness, which is why the umbrella organization in view of the ongoing crises #sportconnects initiative brought into being.
