While people in the east of the country were able to enjoy summery, sunny hours again on Thursday, a thunderstorm super cell in the south of Austria ensured a comeback of winter – wave-like hailstorms bathed many gardens and streets within minutes in an inhospitable and destructive white dress: the hailstones were sometimes as big as golf balls, as evidenced by photos of the storm chasers from “Stormscience” on Twitter.
But not only hail, but also heavy rain showers made progress in traffic difficult or impossible, especially in Carinthia. The storm center, which had already declared the highest warning level before the storm began, documented the super cell and its effects on social channels, which continue to fill up with photos, videos and reports of severe devastation even in the evening hours. The fire brigades in the south of the country are in constant use – insurance companies expect a flood of damage reports.
More on that soon!
