Turkey has long struggled with the English translation of its country. Now a new name should remedy the situation: In order not to be confused with the turkey (“Turkey”) in the future, the country should be called “Turkiye” in international diplomacy in the future.
The government officially requested the United Nations and other international organizations to use the name “Turkiye” in the future. As the Turkish news agency Anadolu reports, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has sent a letter to this effect.
The country itself has been using the term “Made in Turkiye” for export products since the end of 2021. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that this designation best represents Turkey’s culture, civilization and values. The airline “Turkish Airlines” had previously advertised with the slogan “Hello Türkiye”.
