“An epidemic cannot be the case at all. Monkeypox causes a much milder disease progression than the natural smallpox virus. I believe things will be sorted out and the outbreak will be quelled shortly.” Vitaly Zverev, virologist at the Russian Medical Institute (RAMS), gave the all-clear in an interview with the newspaper “Tass”.
The expert assumes that the virus could have come from a laboratory. “It’s probably a laboratory infection.” However, it cannot be ruled out that “someone brought an exotic animal from Africa, a group of people were infected and then spread it to several countries,” explained Zverev.
