Horse dewormer “Ivermectin” from the net: drug smuggling increased tenfold!
The corona pandemic has changed everything: more and more Austrians are even ordering their medicines online. At the top of the shopping list: the deworming agent Ivermectin – for which FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl had stirred the “advertising drum”.
The local one Customs reports a tenfold increase in the amount of pharmaceuticals seized in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year. While there were 25 at the time, 279 kg were seized this year – a not insignificant part of which was made up of the dewormer Ivermectin, the Ministry of Finance reported on Sunday.
Customs protects against life-threatening misuse
Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP): “The false and dangerous rumors that you can protect yourself from COVID-19 or fight the virus with a dewormer for horses persist, although even the manufacturer warns against such use. Our customs controls protect against this life-threatening drug abuse.”

Tobacco smuggling: Strong increase in illegal shipment of e-cigarettes
The tobacco and non-smoker protection law prohibits the mail order sale of tobacco products. Because young people and adults cannot be adequately protected when these products are shipped, since neither the age of the consumers can be checked nor whether the products contain other components that are harmful to health. In the first quarter of 2022, however, there were increased seizures by customs in this area in particular: while there were 368 seizures of tobacco products in 2021, in the first quarter of 2022 there were already 550 cases in which Austrian customs officers seized illegally imported tobacco products .
The number of smuggled cigarettes in the first quarter of 2022 fell by around half compared to the same period in 2021. Among other things, 2,044 illegally shipped e-cigarettes were confiscated.
