A smile says more than a thousand words, as the saying goes. In fact, we’re constantly exchanging non-verbal messages—whether we like it or not. We would like to know what is going on in the head of our counterpart, but how? In the first season of “eXXpress Life” we brought you closer to reading facial expressions and hidden emotions. In today’s episode we will go into the body, because it also shows a lot.
Body language is a form of non-verbal communication. It includes all conscious and unconscious signals of the body – including facial expressions, gestures, posture and movement. They provide information about the emotional state of our counterpart. Furthermore, body language has a decisive influence on the comprehensibility of our spoken message and the effect a person has on their interlocutor.
Whether it’s on a date or a job interview, body language can give us interesting insights. Is my counterpart making contact or turning away, does he or she seem stressed or does my interlocutor feel relaxed? Even if the upper body is still, the legs can give some clues – because they are the most unconscious part of the body that often reveals more than one would like.
But there are also many body signals that have developed culturally and are as misleading as the different word languages. For example, an attitude that is normal for us can cause outrage in other parts of the world. Groups of people, societies and cultures develop their own system of non-verbal messages, their own code. Knowing this code is the only way to understand and use it properly. So there are body signals that we all understand and use and others that are culture- or region-specific. In any case, it is helpful to know the possibilities of body language well, to learn to read and use them.
Each of our fingers has a different meaning, for example the thumb stands for dominance, the pinky for status. Patricia Staniek tells us what the notorious middle finger is all about.
Patricia Staniek is a profiler, author, criminologist and behavior analysis expert. Using simple and clear examples, she introduces us to the world of body language.
Look forward to an exciting episode, after which you will observe your surroundings a little more closely! Tonight at 8:15 p.m. in a new episode of “eXXpress Life” with Carina Schwarz – only on eXXpressTV!
