It is now the sixth package of sanctions against Russia that the EU states are negotiating, and also the “most massive of all sanctions packages”, as Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg emphasized after the Council of Ministers. Austria supports it “fully”. It also includes a comprehensive oil embargo.
“We want sanctions that hit Russia, and not sanctions that weaken us more than Russia,” explained Schallenberg. “This war is a breach of civilization on an unprecedented scale and a turning point in our history.”
The foreign minister reported that the oil embargo will affect the member states differently, since not all of them are equally dependent on Russian oil. Austria is less dependent on this than other countries. Nevertheless, inflation is to be expected. Austria’s dependence on gas is significantly greater. Here it is still important for Austria to “screw back” this dependency. A gas embargo is currently not up for debate.
According to current planning, there are exceptions to the oil embargo for Hungary and Slovakia. However, Schallenberg was confident that an agreement would be found for this sixth package of sanctions.
