It was June 30, 2021. Benjamin Karl was on the Felbertauernstraße near Mittersill. His car skidded on a hail-covered road. Karl then crashed into an oncoming car. Its driver (70) from Pinzgau died in the accident and his wife (69) was seriously injured. Karl was traveling at excessive speed. At the trial he made a remorseful confession. Last Friday he was convicted in the district court of Zell am See. He received a three-month suspended prison sentence. Both the prosecution and the defense agree with the verdict.
Today, Tuesday, it was announced that the verdict is now final. The native of Lower Austria, who lives in Lienz, accepted the verdict on Friday. The District Attorney initially made no statement. A spokesman for the Salzburg public prosecutor’s office said today, Tuesday, at the request of the Austria Press Agency that the public prosecutor’s office will not appeal against the verdict.
