“With regard to the project in Dornbirn, we had to decide not to pursue it further for various reasons,” the American group said on Tuesday afternoon. Dornbirn Mayor Andrea Kaufmann (ÖVP) had assumed yesterday that the plans would only be “put on hold”.
There was a basic consensus among all the factions of the Dornbirn City Council that the construction at the planned location not far from the Dornbirn-Nord motorway junction was not ideal. Project operators and property owners have agreed to let further developments rest until the summer. The plans for the distribution center were criticized. Opponents feared a sharp increase in traffic.
For the youth organizations of the SPÖ and the Greens, however, a compromise was not the desired solution. Right from the start, the young generation in the SPÖ Vorarlberg created a mood against such a distribution center and, together with the Green Youth, launched the petition “Amazon – No Thanks!” founded. The two apron organizations now feel confirmed in their claim.
It now seems to have become too colorful for the company. “We found other ways to optimize our existing network so that customers receive their orders with the quality they expect from Amazon,” a company spokesman told the “Presse”.
The distribution center should have been built in Dornbirn not far from the Dornbirn-Nord motorway junction on a 33,000 square meter site. A 28 meter high, six-storey building was planned.
