Die UEFA has decided on further sanctions against Russian football. Among other things, Russian clubs are not allowed to participate in the next European Cup season. The decision also has direct consequences for Austria’s European Cup representative, Sturm Graz. The runners-up will only start in the third round of the Champions League qualification at the beginning of August, would have to survive two rounds instead of three for the premier class and, in the worst case, play in the Europa League group phase.
Austria’s football thus has three clubs in the European group stages in autumn. Champion Salzburg is playing again in the Champions League, for the third-placed team, being eliminated from the Europa League play-off means, in the worst case, participation in the group stage of the Conference League.
Die UEFA-Sanctions due to the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine also apply at international level. Among other things, the women’s national team was excluded from the EM 2022 in England and replaced by Portugal. The men’s national team of Russia has been excluded from the upcoming Nations League.
