You don’t see that every day in southern Canada either: In the province of Québec, some residents of the village of Madeleine-Centre were amazed when a polar bear suddenly appeared in front of their eyes. The police called on the population to be careful. The animal is currently being sought.
Sophie Bonneville, who lives in the small village, said, “Our dog barked and I heard my husband yell, ‘There’s a bear! There’s a bear!’” When she first told it, people didn’t want to believe her, but she was able to take photographic evidence that inevitably confirms the animal’s presence. Bonneville added, “Nobody’s seen anything like this here. How can the bear get across the pack-ice to the river, swim across it, and come here?”
Unfortunately, polar bears are increasingly threatened with extinction. Their natural habitat literally melts away from under their feet. Forced by climate change, they have to cover ever greater distances to find food. Polar bears can swim a hundred kilometers at a time without any problems. Unfortunately, there is no exact data on how many polar bears are still living in the wild. However, researchers assume 20,000 to 25,000 animals.
