The use of airplanes to transfer intensive care patients and medical emergencies has already been tested, and now Berlin wants to continue to “retrain” mobile hospitals in the truest sense of the word: The German Bundeswehr wants to buy ICE trains in order to use them for this purpose – i.e. as mobile hospitals . According to a report by “Bild am Sonntag”, which refers to information from the German Ministry of Defense, the German armed forces should have at least three ICE 3 Neos available for this purpose from 2025. Among other things, the plans provide for the establishment of intensive care beds in the trains.
In addition to caring for and transporting the wounded, the ICEs could then also be used to transfer civilian intensive care patients in crisis situations. During the corona pandemic, the Bundeswehr used aircraft for this purpose. Cost point for an ICE 3 Neo: Between 25 and 30 million euros – without “tuning” to an ambulance, of course.
